Harvard Declares Dairy Not Part of Healthy Diet

To All,

Do you agree with Harvard (Dairy is not part of a healthy diet)?  If yes, why?

The Harvard School of Public Health sent a strong message to the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) and nutrition experts everywhere with the recent release of its “Healthy Eating Plate” food guide.  The university was responding to the USDA’s new MyPlate guide for healthy eating, which replaced the outdated and misguided food pyramid.

Harvard’s nutrition experts did not pull punches, declaring that the university’s food guide was based on sound nutrition research and more importantly, not influenced by food industry lobbyists.  The greatest evidence of its research focus is the absence of dairy products from the “Healthy Eating Plate” based on Harvard’s assessment that “…high intake can increase the risk of prostate cancer and possibly ovarian cancer.”  The Harvard experts also referred to the high levels of saturated fat in most dairy products and suggested that collards, bok choy, fortified soy milk, and baked beans are safer choices than dairy for obtaining calcium, as are high quality supplements.

Kudos to Harvard for promoting greater consumption of vegetables and fruits, as well as healthier protein options such as fish, beans or nuts.  And kudos to Harvard for ignoring the lobbyists and showing the USDA what healthy eating is all about.

WOOHOOO WTG Harvard for pointing out that the USDA food guidelines are influenced by food industry lobbyists!!!   Which is pretty much why I've totally given up listening to or following their guidelines.

And I would not be surprised that they have correlated dairy with cancer and other problems.  However, I would argue that it's the dairy products themselves.  I would argue that it's the chemicals, fed to the animals and the processing itself that is causing the problems, not the product in the raw.

This is the first area we are working on switching to organic/natural products. We already have our own chickens. We've pretty much switched to butter instead of margarines. I'm too cheap to throw out what we had but getting there slowly.  Some of the butter hasn't been organic but that's the next step.  I'm also now buying lard and trying to use up all the vegetable type oils.  We've gone back to whole milk vs 2%, 1% or skim and trying to buy that in organic as well but not always available at a price I can afford at our store.  Would like to find a local farmer to buy raw milk from and do even better.  Actually I would prefer to own my own milk cow, but with all the trips we're making to Mom's right now due to her health it's just not feasible.

Personally, I don't think that saturated fats are bad for us.  Again I believe it's the chemicals in our meats and dairy that are the real problem, well and produce too for that matter.  Not the natural ingredients found in them.

I'd much rather be putting raw, organic whole milk in my body than pesticide laced produce, especially a soy product.

And anyone, or any entitiy such as a school that is advocating supplements over getting vitamins and minerals from a food source makes me a tad nervous, as to their agenda as well.

Um FORTIFIED soy milk. That means they added vitamins to it. I can take vitamins out of a jar with out drinking that nasty stuff. I would rather go with out dairy all together than drink soy milk. I am all for eating the dark leafys though
